Here’s What You Need to Know About the Situation in Skagway:
On August 9, 2017, a Unimog touring vehicle ran off the road during an excursion tour. The accident occurred around 11:00 am at the Alaska Excursions Dog Camp. The Skagway company offers tours of a musher’s camp, which houses around 200 racing dogs during the summer months.
During the beginning of the tour, visitors took a 4X4 ride up a rugged mountain road in a Unimog, a multi-purpose, all-wheel drive vehicle. After the crash, the fire department and EMS volunteers responded to the scene at Mile 10 Dyea Road. In all, 28 people were injured.
The victims were brought to the local Dahl Memorial Clinic. After being treated, 25 were released for minor injuries. However, the other 3 were medevaced to receive treatment for more serious injuries. The clinic’s executive director, Shelly O’Boyle, reported injuries such as broken bones, bumps, bruises, and head injuries. In response to the incident, the clinic’s emergency plan was put into action. This is the first time the plan has been activated since an accident more than 2 years ago injured 23 people.
